What makes people massacre people that they live so close by to? What causes people to have such disregard and to not care at all about someone else’s life, the thing most precious to them? The Darfur Genocide is a horrendous killing that is happening at the moment. Imagine, at this time, while you are sitting and carrying on with your normal, and ordinary lives, there are people and children, suffering from the cruel environment of a genocide. It is a current international issue with which we must deal with, or it could seriously get out of hand. There is currently a civil war going on over there right now between the government and rebels. This is not only affecting the government and the rebels, but everyone who is currently in Darfur. The number of people dying is frightening. The death toll in Darfur is higher than the previously estimated. Several times the number was estimated to be around 70,000 that have died altogether, with the number rising every day. “In 2005, 180,000 died over 18 months according to the WHO estimate, while other estimates doubled the figure.”(Hagan) Over a million people are now displaced as a result of the killing. The genocide is hurting the country tremendously and is making a huge dent in the country’s history overall. Not only is the genocide hurting the country and people now, but in the future it will affect the country and people as well. It will take a lot to recover from this disaster. Also it is engraving horrific images and memories in the people’s minds, especially the children. In a book I am currently reading, Darfur Diaries, Adam, Aisha, and Jen, who are all journalists, are making a documentary about the terrible killing that is happening in Darfur. They go to Sudan, and are on their way to Darfur. The things they see are horrible, and really reach down into their hearts. Even though you personally can’t go there and stop the killing, there are some things you can do to help. For example, you can send money and supplies to Darfur and help the victims. This will help refugees and their families survive, and possibly get them through this horrible time period and position they are in. Another thing that you can do that most people don’t realize will help, is to raise awareness. Even though this sounds corny, raising awareness actually helps. If more people know about it, then more people can help or send money and supplies. One last thing you can do to help the victims in Darfur, is that you can start an organization. This organization that you create can raise money and help refugees and victims in Darfur. You can use the last two points I pointed out would be the whole purpose of the organization and it would possibly save lives. So instead of just hearing about this and saying it is sad, you should get out there and help these poor people as much as possible.

  1. I like your plan to help Darfur. Raising money is a great idea, it can help them get many necessary things they need.
