War and Its Impact on Society

Alexander Ramirez, 10B

“All war is based on deception,” said Makarov, the main antagonist from Modern Warfare 3. Although being a fictional character this quote relates much to civilization and how war impacts the communities it inhabits. All over the world we see examples of this kind of tyranny and abuse from powers that are meant to uphold society and not bring it down. It is a constant flow of evil and corruption from men given or who have taken power from simply feeling higher than others. We see
this today in the middle east specifically Afghanistan by the occupation of the Taliban and other terrorist groups.
For decades the Taliban has had control over places such as Pakistan and Afghanistan. They have ravaged all the power and taken complete control over the people, funds and any bit of land. Constant attempt to overrun the organization have gone amiss from super powers like Britain, Russia and currently the U.S. still in occupation. Afghan citizens are forced under oppression and tyranny by the iron fist of the Taliban’s rule. With no intent of lightening up on control military has been forced to be taken by outside nations to try and help these people in these nations.

Today the Taliban currently control over 90% of Afghanistan and part of Pakistan as well. Refugee numbers grow every day with a total of over 75% being women out of 7.5 million civilians. It’s truly scary how people can be forced to live in such a manner when on the drop of a dime this can happen anywhere in the world. Currently though it is happening in Afghanistan and these people need our help. Soldiers are out there risking their lives in order to fight for the rights of these people but they are not the only ones who can help out. Simple acts of kindness can be taken out everyday to help out those in need to help these middle easterners and also to help bring our troops back home.

In the book I read The Dressmaker of Khair Khana we see the life of young Kamila a girl living in Afghanistan during the Taliban’s rule. Kamila is left by the male in her family and forced to work with the other girls in her household to make pay. She risks the beatings of the Taliban in order to keep her business running and her customers happy. It is very hard to make money as a female in her Afghanistan but Kamila is willing to do whatever it takes to do what must be done. After all the struggle and pain she is forced to endure she is still too stubborn to quit but only strives to succeed for herself and her family.

People don’t realize how easy it is to help out these poor societies in their struggles. There is a plethora of things we can do as worldly neighbors to benefit all parties involve and makes ourselves better for the future. With careful consideration and a little bit of time and effort we can achieve so much in our lives. We can help out people like Kamila and others in her situation by:

  • Raising awareness towards the cause
  • Make care packages to send to help those in need
  • Donate money to help out those in debt
  • Give supplies like food, water and daily essentials

Through these simple actions we can see relief be achieved in no time to help all people and have freedom for all. It is the small things that count in the long run. Over time who knows what else we will be able to accomplish when we truly put our minds towards a main goal and live together in harmony.
