The Unheard Child Sex Slave
It is unbelievable to think that a 5-year-old girl would be sold into sex slavery and raped by men paying $4,000 to rape her for a week. This is happening right now somewhere in the world. One of many stories is told by Somaly Mam’s in her book of her life, “The Road of Lost Innocence.” Mam was an orphan in Cambodia and sold when she was 9 years old and ended up in a brothel. She was beaten, raped, had maggots and snakes dropped on her, and saw girls murdered. When she escaped she started helping other girls escape. Mam was brave enough to tell her story and save others. She saw the terrible things that happen in human trafficking that people usually just learn about in the news.

Because of people like Somaly telling the truth and being brave, the large human trafficking crimes in the world are getting more attention. Up until now less than 1 percent of the 21 million human trafficking victims worldwide have been identified. Human trafficking is the 3rd largest criminal activity in the world.
More needs to be done to stop human trafficking in this country and all over the world. The UN estimates that up to 325,000 people are victims of human trafficking in United States Borders alone. People who keep these records believe that the numbers on human trafficking underestimate the trafficking of minors.  This is not something that is happening only far away and outside of the United States According to the UN Chairman of the Committee on Foreign Affairs, 100,000 American citizens who are children are victims of human trafficking.
The story Somaly Mam tells of her childhood as a sex slave puts a face on the trafficking of children. She rescues children one child at a time. There are millions of children that need to be rescued. Human trafficking of children for sex has to end one child at a time.

  1. Is there a way to stop human trafficking and if so what are some ideas you have. Is there a way that students can do something to help the victims of human trafficking?

  2. I really like how you started off by giving exact facts on how women are captured at a extremely young age, and sold for thousands of dollars into slavery. I really like this because it helped me understand exactly how terrible the sex trafficking situation is. I also like how you used specific facts to back up your points, such as when you talk about how sex trafficking also happens a lot in the U.S. I feel like you could've worked on adding a little bit of a stronger concluding statement summarizing all of your main points rather than just saying that a lot of kids needed to be rescued.

  3. You add your story from your book very nicely however you say things need to be done about sex trafficking without stating how. Also your last sentence could have a powerful affect on people.

  4. I think you should write something on how people can help to stop sex trafficking.

  5. Great first sentence charlie, you really grab readers attention with that sentence. However charlie you need to extend your op-ed. Make it longer talk more and also you should use other resources other than just your book.

  6. Your hook was very good because the moment you read it, it catches you and it hits you like "Oh my god, this is ridiculous“ Though I think that you should add in more logos to make it stronger and also put in suggestions as in how individuals should stop it so it leaves the reader something to think about.
