women's survival during the Taliban control

  Mariah Gilmore, 10C
“Their is non-existent equality between men and women in Afghanistan.Even though women have jobs, and can go to school in other parts, it is not in their power to have that their. For rule violations, many people could be brutalize especially women. The government is trying to help the women get the equal amount of rights, but they are still being ignored by Taliban. “ This is a quote based from an article Called, “Betrayl, Mariam  that explains how women’s daily lives are like. It also connects to the book I’m reading, “ The dressmaker Of Khair Khana” by Gayle Tzemach Lemmon. Women aren’t equal with the men because of Taliban’s control over Afghanistan. The question would be, “ How does the Taliban control affect women in Afghanistan?” It would affect them in a way which they don’t have any freedom or equal rights. Many Women in Afghanistan were bruised and beaten to death by many men during the Taliban Control.
In the book, it talks about the main character named Kamila Sidiqi who has to raise her sisters on her own since her father and brother left them. Women in Afghanistan were banned from school under Taliban’s control. As Kamila graduate from school, she was trying to figure out how she was going to take care of her sisters since she doesn’t have any money to have any electricity. Kamila decided to created a dressmaking business. “  Since the arrival of the Taliban several months earlier, life had quickly devolved into a series of challenges for the twenty-four-year-old mother of four.”(pg 82). In this quote it explains how Kamila’s life has gotten a little bit difficult since Taliban’s arrived earlier than expected. Since she was banned from teaching at school it’s hard for her and her family to survive without her teaching salary. This also connects to women in Afghanistan because they were suppose to stay home at all times. Many women were banned from teaching at schools because of the control by the Taliban. Many women were mostly punished and have equal rights. Many women in Afghanistan have no freedom due to the laws they have to follow from the Taliban.

As the writer and character connected in a way because this story happened to the author in real life. Gayle wanted to tell the readers how women had a hard time in Afghanistan. It proves that in life today, it’s still happening in the world were living in today. The connections that Gayle made when she was writing this book was the decrease in their economy, men were forced to their homes, and women have to stay at home and were banned from teaching at school. In the story also talks about if one of their rules were broken, they would have severe punishment. Many girls and Women suffered from the beatings they had were taken to hospitals due to many injuries. Gayle’s book shows how women wasn’t treated equally. It proves how non Fiction books can tell a person’s story and  their survival in a characters point of view. Women in Afghanistan have to go through this struggle everyday. The UN are trying to help Afghanistan men and women have their freedom from The group who Started the Taliban Control. Many Women and girls are still hoping that the pain and suffering will vanish, and they would have their freedom.

  3. I like how you incorporate the background information, still I feel like it would have been better if you would have added a a picture ad information outside the book, and if you did do citations.
